The Smell of Death

Friends and a Funeral

Beginning One stormy Saturday morning of April, two very close friends named Jason and Don were driving along the Highway 101 in Los Angeles. They were making their way to the San Fernando Mission Cemetery. You see, another close friend of theirs named Luke had just lost his Grandmother. She had Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a type of cancer that originates when a specific white blood cell called a lymphocyte mutates and multiplies rapidly. The disease affects the lymphatic system, which is part of the body’s immune system.    Jason tilted his head on the window of the passenger’s seat, and thought back to when he had Hodgkin’s Disease five years earlier. It was on a Wednesday in 2012. He had just finished up with his last class and started to not feel well. When one of his fellow classmates named George asked him, “Hey, you okay Jason?” Jason replied, “Yeah, just been taking a lot in this week from classes, that’s all.” But little did he know that this was more than jus...

Some Unfinished Business

Waking up to a glamorous city, seeing the happy people, and cleaning up France, makes me feel alive.   My name is Alexandre Caron, and I am a Holocaust survivor. Even though it’s been nine years since the end of World War II, it feels like it was just yesterday. Garcon, when you look back at the tough parts of life like losing those you love, you realize that it’s tough being the one who survives.  Sometimes I wish I had died in the ovens.  Though a bunch of us are still trying to move forward with life, I just can’t. Whenever I go to bed, I have nightmares, nightmares that my dead family are coming back as zombies, nightmares that feel like another war is beginning, and nightmares that someone else may finish what Hitler started. One way or another, I have to find these monsters, and end their tyranny. I will start looking in Germany for some answers. From there, I shall find these Nazis, by using the phone book records, and my memories from the time I spent in the ...

Journey Back to England

On the morning of July 20 th , In the city of Chicago, the air was high in terms of temperature, the streets were packed with traffic, and the population was bigger than it had been in the past few weeks. Maybe it had something to do with it being summer vacation, or maybe it was at the time of day when most people were off from work. Whatever the case was, everybody in the city seemed to be ready to enjoy the lovely day, especially young Richard Brown who was wrapping up with his job at the CarMax.   It was just almost five-thirty and Richard was dying to get to his apartment in downtown, after sitting at his desk for almost nine hours. While walking down the street of Hillside Ave, when he received a text from his younger brother Joe saying, “Yoh Rich, meet me at the Ghirardelli ice cream store in an hour, there’s a big surprise for you.” Richard was startled, “A surprise for me?” He said to himself, “I wonder what it could be.” Without asking any more questions, Richard walked t...

The love I never got

Most people were counting down the seconds for the clock to hit five on Friday night. Everyone that is, except for poor Adam Star.   In his dreams, he was going out with the beautiful red-haired Allison Grey.   But deep down he knew that at 5:00 a white Ferrari would pull up to the Cargill office and the Zac Efron -looking Thomas Storm would drive off with Allison.   Adam, on the other hand, would drive off in his five-year-old but fully paid-off Hyandai Kona.     Adam remembered the day he first met Allison. It was orientation day in late August, three years earlier. At the time, Adam still had a slight stammer when he was nervous, but nothing like the stutter that had plagued him through junior high.  Like most people who suffer through junior high, Adam was a little insecure.  He had a good job and a few good friends; he spent a lot of time playing video games and role-playing games.  Things that Thomas Storm would characterize as nerdy....
